Devastated by a failed hostage situation which resulted in the deaths of a young mother and her child, LAPD negotiator Jeff Talley exits Los Angeles for a no profile job as chief of police in the low crime hamlet of Bristo Camino, a small town in Ventura County. When three delinquent teenagers follow home a family intending to steal their car, they have inadvertently picked the wrong house on the wrong day. The trio find themselves trapped in a multi-million dollar compound on the outskirts of town, owned by an accountant working for a mysterious crime enterprise. Panicked, the teenagers take the family hostage, placing Talley in exactly the kind of situation he never wanted to face again. Soon after, Talley readily hands authority of the hostage situation over to the Ventura County Sheriffs Department and leaves the scene. Meanwhile, inside the compound is digital information, which is time sensitive and invaluable to the mysterious criminals and critical to their enterprise. They will stop at nothing to get what belongs to them. Talley is forced to resume the command he abandoned, where the stakes quickly evolve into a hostage situation far more volatile and terrifying than anything he could ever imagine.

There&#39;s no denying Bruce Willis has based his career on The John McClane (which is something like The Tom Cruise, only a lot more tolerable) – that intensely smug, sassy maverick. That&#39;s not to say he isn&#39;t a great actor, but The John McClane has woven itself so deeply into Willis&#39;s turbo-charged man-roles over the years that he and it have become inseparable.<br/><br/>Until HOSTAGE.<br/><br/>Bruce Willis does some of the best acting of his career here, as a damaged cop whose failure can be read in his sad eyes. Part John McClane, part Sean Penn, part Harrison Ford, all thespian.<br/><br/>Willis is Jeff Talley, an ex-hostage negotiator who removed himself from the grimy Los Angeles streets after a negotiation went horribly wrong (we see this defining moment in a flashback indicated by Talley sporting hermit dreads and face-growth like Grizzly Adams) and now patrols the yuppie &#39;burbs of Bristo Camino (say it like you&#39;re eating caviar). His wife and daughter are not on the best of terms with him.<br/><br/>Into these bucolic environs, young thugs (Jonathan Tucker and Marshall Allman) led by crazy-faced Mars Krupcheck (Ben Foster) break in to a rich accountant&#39;s (Kevin Pollak) fortified house, beat him unconscious and take his two kids hostage (Michelle Horn, Jimmy Bennett). Talley is called in to negotiate but declines the rigorous psychological responsibility. Then we find out the accountant works for the Mob and there is damning information on a disk in his home office. The movie doubles down, the Mob taking Talley&#39;s family hostage, forcing him to negotiate with the thugs who have their accountant hostage. From the thugs, he needs to get that disk; from the Mob he needs to get his family.<br/><br/>Excellent twist! Reason enough for Willis to go Full Metal Oscar, never more apparent than in the tearfully-disturbing climax, as Talley sails over the edge and pumps round after round into a guerrilla who kidnapped his family – long after the guy is dead…<br/><br/>From a novel by Robert Crais, Doug Richardson writes and Florent Emilio Siri directs this well-executed actioner, ratcheting tension with all the right moves, raising the stakes with all the right emotion, ticking the clock with all the right desperation, and blowing things up with all the right abandon. And capturing a nuanced Bruce Willis performance that makes us suspect The John McClane has been taking acting lessons.
Normally, I don&#39;t comment on movies, but felt it was due after reading several glowing reviews. I&#39;m not sure these folks saw the same movie I did.<br/><br/>Bruce Willis plays a former hostage negotiator, and one year after an abysmal tragedy, we find him riding out the end of his career as police chief in a quiet little town. A cushy job, far far away. A place that requires the audience be told nothing ever happens. Go figure, something does.<br/><br/>Three young adult wannabe hoodlums break into a family&#39;s home to steal a car, when things suddenly go wrong and turn into another hostage situation for Bruce. Bruce happily hands over scene control to county law enforcement, and decides to call it a day, despite one of his officers being shot. This was the beginning of many un…as in NOT believable plot devices.<br/><br/>The action was decent, but the plot was poorly developed and presented. The adult antagonists were vague and not clearly defined. Who were they, we don&#39;t know and never find out. We should have read the book first. The teenage antagonists we&#39;re supposed to sympathize and feel sorry for. At least the interplay between hostage taker and hostage felt real.<br/><br/>The entire drama revolves around a mysterious DVD, with even more mysterious criminal information on it. What is it? Who does it implicate? Who is willing to kill and die for it? I&#39;ll bet the people who read the book know. Apparently, only real law enforcement people require a motive. The rest of us just need Bruce, a gun, and somewhere to point.<br/><br/>Sadly, Bruce Willis (along with one or two others) does a decent job in a less than decent movie. 5 stars was for the action. Otherwise, a complete waste of time. I would rather have watched Hudson Hawk 2.
Hostage has suspense and momentum.
